Indeed, arduous and challenging, the Pin Parvati Pass Trek holds some of the most beautiful landscapes that any crossover trek in India can offer. One of the most beautiful things about the trek is that you can do it from either side. It is customary to start the trek from the Parvati Valley and conclude it in the Mudh village of the Pin Valley. Alternatively, you can start from the Pin Valley in the Spiti region and conclude your trip in the Parvati Valley on the other side. In that case, you have the chance to take a rejuvenating bath in the hot springs of Parvati Kund in Kheerganga. The Pin Parvati Pass Trek cost might vary in the above cases. With a plethora of landscapes, including alpine meadows, marshlands, dense forests, and glacial plains, this is one of those crossover treks that offers nearly everything you can ask for in terms of spectacular sceneries that treat your eyes.
The strenuous but rewarding 6-9 days wilderness trek crosses the snow-capped Pin Parvati Pass (at an elevation of 5319 meters or 17457 feet) from Barshaini in the Parvati Valley to Mudh in the Pin Valley of Spiti, covering a distance of 100 kilometers approximately. It is graded as strenuous to challenging. High altitude, trails with boulders, moraine stretches and icy river crossings, glaciers ridden with crevasses, and slippery trails are not for the inexperienced or the weak-hearted travelers. Therefore, this trek is considered a glory for passionate trekkers.
To conquer this trek, you should have prior experience of embarking on high-altitude expeditions, physical fitness with stamina to cover 5 kilometers in 30 minutes without stress, and the strength to carry a 15-20 kg backpack on expeditions. The Pin Parvati Pass Trek itinerary is quite demanding, and covering it is not an easy feat. You should start training at least three months before the trek to achieve optimum fitness. Create a personalized training plan, include workouts that boost your aerobic fitness, focus on building strength in your back, shoulders, legs, arms, and abdominal muscles, improve your flexibility, and focus on dedication. Besides, you should consider staying hydrated and getting proper sleep.
It is only accessible from June to October. During the early months (January- June) of the year, there are chances of snow covering the high passes. However, the snow melts considerably by August. During the monsoon season, the Kullu-Manali region remains affected due to rain, and therefore, remains damp. But, in Lahaul and Spiti regions, the weather remains sunny and warm during the day with temperatures between 12-20 °C, while the nights can be cold with temperatures between -2 to 6 °C. September and early October experience pleasant weather with a dash of snowfall. However, towards the end of October, it starts snowing considerably, and the day temperature hovers around 12-18 °C with evening temperature around - 6 to 4 °C. Therefore, early September to early October is the most appropriate time for Pin Parvati Pass trekking.
Your gear guide and checklist should be thorough if you want to cover the Pin Parvati Pass Trek without much difficulty. Consider carrying the basic gear like a backpack (50- 60 liters), a daypack (20-30 liters) and rain covers for both for chance downpours, a sturdy walking stick, headlamps with spare batteries, water bottles, and hydration kits, snacks to recharge yourself during the trek and personal medical kit, including first-aid kits. Next comes your items of clothing, which should be pretty exhaustive as well. Carry thermal inners for top and bottom halves, full-sleeve, quick-dry t-shirts, quick-dry track pants, fleece jackets, woolen sweaters, down feather jackets, waterproof pants, and windcheaters, ponchos, etc. Take a suncap, woolen cap, balaclava, neck gaiters, and sunglasses apart from synthetic and woolen gloves and extra pairs of cotton and woolen socks. Your trekking shoes should match up for the journey. Get yourself the best quality trekking shoes that are high-ankle, waterproof, and sturdy with a good grip. For toiletries, carry moisturizers, sunscreen, lip salve, hand sanitizers, biodegradable soap, toothpaste and toothbrush, quick-dry towel, excess toilet paper, wet wipes, antibacterial and antifungal powder, etc. Try packing for every eventuality but keep it lightweight.
Follow the instructions of your trek leader thoroughly to avoid any unprecedented circumstances during the trek.
