The trek to Upper Mustang provides a glimpse into a trans-Himalayan region that has been closed to visitors for most of history, marking it as a unique and special experience. Additionally, this moderate, 2-week-long trek can be completed year-round, which makes it one of the more accessible options available in Nepal.
Although this trek is available year-round, the winter can generate harsh winds in the desert that many find difficult to travel through. Therefore, excursions are usually recommended from March to November. The Mustang region is a highly protected area and visitors require multiple permits. All tours must be led by a government-certified guide. Visitors will have to purchase a permit for the Mustang region specifically and for the Annapurna Conservation area, which overlaps this trek. Lastly, Nepal requires all international visitors (with the exception of Indian nationals) to present or purchase a 30-day visa.
