Snow skiing in Gulmarg is, albeit one of the best activities of winter sports and skiing in India. It occurs in two phases. In the first phase, the Gulmarg skiing packages take you from Gulmarg (2600 meters) to Kongdoori (3080 meters). The second phase of the skiing packages has 36 skiing cabins and 18 towers that take you from Kongdoori to 3979 meters on Mount Apharwat. The chair lift system connects Kongdoori to Mary’s Shoulder at 3400 meters and takes the skiers to the alpine skiing destinations. Although the Apharwat Peak experiences heavy snowfall across the year and is one of the prime destinations for skiing, the best time for skiing in Gulmarg is indeed the winter season. You can embark on these activities right from the end of December to the end of February or the start of March. Gulmarg experiences absolutely unique snow quality due to its altitude and its southern exposure of the subcontinent at a latitude of around 35 degrees. Hence, the seasonal snowfall in Gulmarg is nearly double that in the Alps. The typical tenure for the Gulmarg skiing activity is 6 days. However, you can find multiple customized Gulmarg skiing packages with several travel agencies or trekking companies upon solid research. The Gulmarg Ski Resort is one of the most prominent and formidable ski resorts globally that offers terrific skiing services that are safe. The Gulmarg Ski Resort has incredible avalanche mitigation services and dedicated, government-operated ski patrol teams working around the clock to maintain safety standards and provide snow grooming and rescue services. The ski patrol team at Gulmarg consists of avalanche forecasters and fantastic ski guides who have been well-versed in the art of rescue. As a result, groups, individuals, families, students - irrespective of being amateurs or advanced skiers, flock to the Gulmarg Ski Resort and enjoy basic ski training and advanced levels like backcountry skiing and heli-skiing. Apart from this, the Gulmarg Gondola is a significant attraction. It is the highest-altitude cable car ride in Asia that starts from the Gulmarg Ski Resort and ferries tourists to the Apharwat Peak. The skiing in Gulmarg cost is divided based on phases and in terms of Indian nationals and foreigners who wish to engage in these activities.
• For phase 1 - Gulmarg to Kongdoori, the Gulmarg skiing price is nearly USD 10 (INR 740) per Indian citizen. However, the price is approximately USD 16 (INR 1210) for an extended duration for a foreign national.
• For phase 2 - Kongdoori to Apharwat, the Gulmarg skiing price is approximately USD 16 (INR 1210) for every Indian and USD 25 (INR 1900) for foreign nationals.
You must pack light for your Gulmarg skiing adventure. However, it is essential to go forward with every important item so that you can fend off any unprecedented events or health emergencies. Since winters have sub-zero temperatures here, you must carry 3-4 quick-dry, polyester shirts, 2-3 pairs of sweatpants and ski pants, thermal innerwear, padded down jacket, waterproof jackets, balaclavas, ski caps, gloves, etc. Another important consideration is your footwear. Although it is easy to get rental boots, they might not be the ideal fit. Hence, you can choose to purchase proper, fitting ski boots that make your experience seamless. Generally, every skiing course in Gulmarg offers packages where the ski equipment like poles and skies, meals, hotel stays, passes, and permits are included. Among the essential accessories you must not forget, your sun cap, UV-protection sunglasses, and backpacks with waterproof covers are highly important. You should not forget your toiletries and hygiene essentials. Apart from carrying the usuals - moisturizers, lip balms, toothpaste, toothbrush, quick-dry towel, hand sanitizers, and deodorants, you must not forget your sunscreen and sun-protection lotions. Women should carry sufficient tampons, sanitary napkins, or menstrual cups to feel comfortable during the adventure. Carry basic medication for cough and cold, nausea, stomach ache, allergies, etc., and a well-stocked first-aid box with crepes, bandages, cotton gauze, ointment, antiseptic liquid, etc. Although your passes and permits are the responsibilities of the agency with whom you have booked the skiing package, you should carry an original government-issued photo ID, multiple photocopies of the same, and passport-sized photographs.
